Ah, Miami

Finally, a trip to Miami that Joe and I both enjoyed! We'd both been there together and separately, and we were not big fans. But my friend Mina got married there, our friends Svenja and Anna live there again, and Jim and Ximena too. The first night we stayed with Jim and Ximena in North Beach (literally just about a mile north of South Beach) which was fantastic. They live 2 blocks from the beach, and the weather was beach worthy. We went out to a great Thai dinner with some delightful people and the next day headed to Coconut Grove to settle into the beautiful Mayfair hotel. We had a Japanese soaking tub on our private balcony (but the water didn't heat). Svenja and Anna came from Fort Lauderdale and we had dinner at a great ceviche restaurant. Here are just a few pics, you'll be able to tell which are wedding pics and which ones aren't. :)

Friday.

Cookies in real life are never as good as the cookies in my imagination.

Boo

Well, I did not get in to the program at Columbia University that I applied for, the 6 week publishing course. Oh well, now I start looking for jobs! Just putting a little polish on the ol' resume, looking up old contacts in the industry, getting my interview suit hemmed, reading books with interviewing advice...hopefully I'll have a job I like within the next couple of months! Wish me luck!

Cherry Blossoms!

This is the best time of year in DC, no doubt about it. The beauty is fleeting, and has in fact already flit. These pictures are from a week and a half ago, and as I understand it, the blossoms are gone now. They had just bloomed when we got there on the first day of the Cherry Blossom Festival. The festival doesn't end until the 15th, but it's always a risk trying to see the blooms at just the right time. We went with our friends Jeff and Onika and their baby, Marichelle. Jeff lived in Japan for 5 years, and has a pretty good handle on the culture, which I admire. There were loads of families wearing matching outfits trying to get that one "portrait quality" shot that they could send as next year's Christmas card, and hundreds of people flying incredible kites by the Washington Monument. The rest of the story is in the pictures, so enjoy!

Excellent advice.

Whenever I ask Joe questions about job interviews, he tells me I should talk to his co-worker, Jay. I'm a big fan of Jay, he's smart, funny and has great ties. So yesterday as I was thinking it was about time to get "the interview suit" I decided to email Jay and get his opinion. He gave me permission to share it with the world. I asked, because it was such a good answer I'd give him an HR column in a magazine if I had one. Enjoy and learn.

Wow, fashion advice that ties into my job. What could be better?
I say nix the open toes. Even in a more “casual” environment, you never want to push it too hard during the interview process. You can express your personal style AFTER you’ve landed the job. Always err on the side of caution (read: be conservative). I think the black suit is really a no-fail option, and as you’ve already said, you can jazz it up it subtle ways while still looking professional. I always strive to be better dressed than the person who’s interviewing me. Just be careful what you wear underneath. If you go into an interview, and for some reason it’s like 100 degrees in there, you might end up taking off your jacket. You don’t want any weird sleeve action going on. If you go with color underneath, keep it towards the more pastel shades. While I personally LOVE me some fuchsia, you don’t want them to remember your electric blouse instead of you. I think an interesting Pucci scarf or a groovy pin is a nice way to make a statement without using a megaphone. Avoid “Hello Kitty” at all costs.
I interviewed a woman once who wore a black suit with pants, patent leather pumps, and cufflinks on her French-cuffed blouse. Fierce! She had a pop of color on her lapel with one of those Sex-and-the-City flower pins, and get this – her pink purse matched the pink pin. I wanted to be her.
Excuse me, I had a moment.
As you start to schedule interviews, let me know and I can give you some pointers. I’ve even done “mock interviews” with friends in the past.
Good luck!
Jay
