I know I'm not much of a humanitarian, in fact, I don't like most people. But I do like a charming and hilarious gal named Bettina. Bettina was diagnosed with Parkinson's a couple of years ago, and well, it stinks.
So in the spirit of uniting, research, and a walk in the park, I have joined Team Bettina for the Parkinson's Unity Walk. The goal of Team Bettina is to raise $10,000 by the day of the walk, which is April 26. That's still a lot of time, but if you're reading this now, you clearly have some spare moments that you can use to click here, enter my name, and send a little dough. 100% of the proceeds go directly into researching the disease, which is more than you can say for most walks. I will be hounding you again, so better to give now than have me knocking on your door every day for a month and a half.
PS, find Bettina's blog linked to the right. It's good reading, I promise.

A finished room!
Lest you think I'm a complete hack, I did finish one room, the living room! Here it is. Well, first a refresher of how it looked when we first moved in (and the first couple of months):
I struggled with color choices, since I couldn't remember what the paint we had in DC was, and Joe is emphatically opposed to really bright colors ("I don't want to live in PeeWee's Playhouse!"). So we settled on this peach-ish beige, which to me looks exactly like Silly Putty, but I'm okay with that, I guess. Our oversized furniture proved a challenge, but I think it's working. Any suggestions?

And yes, that IS America's Next Top Model on the TV...hehe.

I have a problem and I need help.
No, no, nothing that dramatic. Our apartment is almost almost done, BUT the bedroom is a challenge that I'm clearly not up to. I have NO inspiration, everything I've tried doesn't work (or not well enough). I know it can be done, but it is beyond me. I need my creative team (that's you!) to send me suggestions. Here are the problems I'm working with (or rather, not working with).
1. It's a tiny bedroom. I think it's less than 100 square feet.
2. We have gigantic furniture. We have a queen bed, two mahogany dressers (part of a set, the rest is being stored in New Jersey), a trunk, a nightstand, a linen cabinet and an old school desk being used for a side table.
3. The very large window faces the street on the first floor, and also the garbage area, so we must have it blocked at all time. I put blinds up, and they're soooooooo ugly, but they do the job. Top-town blinds were too expensive.
4. There are no closets. I'm sure I've mentioned this before. I hung brackets and shelves on one of the long walls, but it leaves our closet entirely open and exposed. We are worried that hanging track curtains or shoji will close in the already tiny room even more.
5. Sigh. Budget. I'm sure if we had unlimited funds, we'd be able to solve the problems easily, but but but. We don't have.
I have considered a murphy bed (too expensive), a loft bed (I think I'm too old to climb a ladder to get into bed, and also, try finding a queen sized loft). A friend of mine who lived in Hong Kong told me about her bed which came down from the ceiling on hydraulics. That sounds super cool and space efficient (hers landed on the dining room table), but a little more than what our little apartment will allow. :) However, none of these ideas are ruled out entirely, especially the loft.
Know any interior design students looking for a challenge? If you have ideas, any ideas at all, please, post them in the comments or email me. I need brainstorming help! OR! If you think you are up to the challenge, please feel free to take it on. I can provide floor plans, ceiling measurents, photographs, whatever you think you might need. Plus, I will post your final designs here with hearts all around a picture of your smiling face. And won't that be worth it?
